Issues / Why do we keep talking about Universal Credit? May 7th, 2019 Hot Topic The issue of Universal Credit pops up all the time in Parliament. But what is Universal Credit (UC)? UC aims to streamline the way benefits are paid. It combines 6 payments into 1 singular payment for those out of work or on a low income. The principles behind UC have been widely supported, including by the Labour Party. UC is currently being rolled out in chunks across the UK rollout. However, delays to payments has left many without money for weeks. Some claimants have ended up in rent-arrears as a result or have been refused accommodation by landlords due to these system delays. Local councils have started to put money aside to help those who may encounter UC problems. Labour has called UC "unfit for purpose" and has, in the past, pressed for a pause to the roll-out to address problems with the system. Now Labour want to scrap it entirely.
