Withdrawal Agreement VS Political Declaration
People often confuse the Withdrawal Agreement and the Political Declaration. One is a legally binding document about our withdrawal from the EU, the other is a non-legally binding document about the relationship moving forward.
Withdrawal Agreement: 585 page document outlining what the divorce from the EU looks like Covers everything from the divorce bill (£39bn) to the protection of citizens' rights to the transition period Also contains the text about the N Ireland backstop Has more support cross party but less support within Conservatives and with the DUP. Political Declaration: 36 page document outlining what the UK and EU *intend* for their relationship to look like This document provides the basis for the next round of negotiations Covers things like UK sovereignty, no freedom of movement, a form of customs arrangement Has much less cross party support and some support from the Conservatives and with the DUP.
